What is a Micro School?
The word “micro school” describes a unique learning experience: like a one room school house, where homeschooling and private school collide for a rich, individualized education!
At Mountain Run Forest School, students receive far more individualized attention than they would receive in a traditional school. With small class sizes (about 5:1 for our full time micro school students!), we cultivate family-like relationships with each student— and with their families. No more feeling disconnected from the people educating your child— we’ll know each other well, see each other every day, and always have time to touch base.
Our families are homeschool families, who have chosen to outsource some or all of their child’s academic instruction to a super-cool mom-friend who knows a lot about plants and bugs, and who isn’t afraid of the mud! When you enroll at Mountain Run Forest School, your child will receive personalized instruction in core academic subjects, and join a pack of outdoor-loving kids who learn and grow together.
Our full time crew studies history, science, art and music appreciation, and literature together, and each student receives individual tutoring in math and reading/phonics. We go on outdoor adventures every week, and field trips all over Virginia and DC. We play with legos, hit up the skate park, frequent the library, and have a blast every day.

Did you know…
In the state of Virginia, a homeschooled child can be educated by a certified teacher? Hiring a private micro-school teacher is an affordable solution to your family’s education needs. It’s the best of all worlds: children receive a high quality education by trained educators (like public school), in a small, personalized setting (like private school), with flexibility and freedom (like homeschool).
Does it sound a little off the beaten path? We’re here to walk you through the process, one step at a time, to ensure an amazing education for your child.
Our Programs
-
Full Time Micro School
For students grades K-2, we offer full time programming— Monday-Friday, 8:00-3:00. 3 days a week are “Core Days,” when we cover the subjects you would expect to find in any school, with plenty of time for play, exploration, and wonder. 2 days a week are “Adventure Days,” when we are joined by homeschooling friends for big explorations into local and state/national parks, swimming holes, hikes, and more.
-
Part Time Forest School
For homeschooling families, join us once or twice a week for adventure days, when we sally forth to local and state/national parks, seek out the best swimming holes, go on epic hikes, as well as learning outdoor skills and exploring the natural world all around us. If you’re looking for a part time adventure group to provide socialization, structure, and survival skills, we’ve got you covered.
